Activities
Fire Building/Outdoor Cooking:
There’s no better way to beat the cold than to sit around a nice warm campfire, unless there’s food too! This skill gives the students a basic knowledge of fire building, and different techniques to starting one, such as using flint and steel. We will also walk through cooking cinnamon apples over the fire with the kids, and of course ending off by eating them!
Intro to Outdoor Survival
Ever wondered what to do next when something goes wrong out in the wilderness? When someone gets injured, or you get stuck outside overnight? Things can go wrong quickly and you need to be able to think on your feet. This skill block will take you through different scenarios and give students a basic understanding of some key survival skills.
Broomball / Ringette
In 1909 Saskatchewan the game of broom ball was first played. Using broom shaped sticks and a soccer ball sized ball, Broomball is very much like hockey- without the skates! Passing, scoring, offence, defence and being the goalie are all explored in the exciting fast-paced game played on our custom built playing area.
Ringette is a team sport played on our outdoor natural ice rink. Using the speed of hockey and the skill of basketball, players use a straight stick to control a rubber ring and score goals in the opponent’s net. Students will get a chance to learn some basic knowledge and experience this thrilling game.
Tubing
Want to feel the crisp winter wind flow through your hair? Desire the exhilaration of speed? Tubing is for you! You’ll be soaring down our custom built tube hill on our heavy duty snow tubes. Race against the clock and challenge your peers or teacher to see who can travel the farthest.
Ice Wall
Ice climbing is an adrenaline fuelled sport, adding a whole new set of challenges to climbing. Our 40ft ice wall looks similar to a frozen waterfall, with a view from the top overlooking frozen Christopher Lake. This is one of the only chances in Saskatchewan to try out this kind of climbing. Students will be taught how to handle ice tools and to climb with the use of crampons. This activity adds some lasting memories to a winter camp.
Challenge Course
Our Challenge course consists of a series of obstacles designed to challenge groups and individuals to work together to accomplish a task. From trust activities and group initiatives to cooperative activities and problems, the challenge course program is designed to develop self-confidence, cooperation amongst the group, decision-making skills, leadership, goal setting and teamwork.
Snow-carving
Learn some basic techniques to do snow sculpture carving then let students’ creativity come out as they get a chance to take a 4x4x6 foot block of snow and turn it into whatever they can imagine.
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing at Camp Kadesh will take your group through the beautiful forest out onto the open landscape. Learn how snowshoes work, their history, spot animal tracks, identify trees, forge your own path… Be prepared for the adventure of a lifetime.
Team Building Games (TBG)
These games are a set of problem solving exercises that require the entire group's participation to solve. Initiatives give the students the opportunity to develop their problem solving skills, listening and cooperation skills, communication and creative thinking. Students will plan, discuss, set a goal and then participate as a group to accomplish the task at hand. This skill will be outdoors weather permitting.
Compass Orienteering
In compass orienteering the students will learn the basics of how to use a compass, the parts of a compass, and how to follow a bearing. Then, working in small groups the students will navigate all over camp, finding clues to solve a problem.
Map Orienteering
In map orienteering the students will learn the basics of how to read a camp map and are sent out in groups to find landmarks and their associated symbols in a friendly competition. The group that finds and records the most landmark symbols is the victor. May be combined with compass orienteering.
Snow Volleyball
Do you love the snow? Do you love volleyball? Well then, why not combine the two? Enjoy a competitive game of volleyball in the snow on our volleyball court.
Quinzee Building
Building a Quinzee is an effective, simple way to stay sheltered in the cold weather. This skill will walk you through the process of building and sculpting a snow mound quinzee and provides the opportunity to even camp out overnight! Note: this skill is only available in our 3 day OREC program.
Crafts:
Bracelet making is an easy DIY craft for anyone to pick up! During this block we will explore the different types of braids such as a Chevron, Fishtail, or Diamond weave. Students will have the chance to experiment with different kinds and have bracelets of their own to take home afterwards.
Evening Activity Choices:
Campfire
The Kadesh OREC team will provide a campfire experience filled with fun interaction. There will be a mix of fun songs, character development challenges, and we wrap it up with a Kadesh staff sharing a personal part of their story and how the decisions they made changed them to be the person they are today.
Movie Night
We will set up a theatre style experience with popcorn, where the students will have a chance to relax and enjoy watching a movie together. *The school must provide the movie*
School Run Session
This option is for you as a teacher to run a session that you feel is best for you, and your students.
